Removal Tools for Viruses
/ Malware - Vendor List
Contributed by: Art Kopp
Users are sometimes faced
with malware infections which their antivirus product cannot clean,
or cannot clean completely. Modern malware often makes changes to
the registry and initialization files. Many antivirus vendors are
now offering utilities which can clean such files for one or more
specific infections. These tools are not intended to be and should
not be viewed as substitutes for antivirus scanners and other preventative
measures. Your antivirus product must first identify the malware and
its variant.
Unfortunately, antivirus
vendors often use different names for the same malware. When you have
determined or suspect an infection by means of your antivirus product,
one method of learning alias names is to put the name into a good
search engine. This often leads to descriptions by the major vendors
which include the aliases used by other vendors. Another effective
method is to use Project VGREP:

Enter
the name or a portion of the name. With luck, you will see the aliases
used by other vendors.
Instructions accompanying
the tools should be read and digested before use. Generally, since
startup files will be cleaned, it's important to reboot and rerun
the utility to make sure that the second time the utility is run there
is no longer anything for the utility to clean.
