Spyware ** is often found in "freeware" these days. Ad-aware is a free multi spyware removal utility from LavaSoft that scans your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware and lets you remove it safely.

** Bits of code that surreptitiously transmit information about the user's Web surfing habits back to a software company. That's "malware" activity in my opinion.
